Available blocks
This page lists the blocks you can use in your content and explains what each is for and how to use it. For how to add blocks, see Create a document.
Add and work with blocks
- Add: Type "/" on an empty line to open the list of blocks. Keep typing part of a block name (for example, "video") to narrow the list.
- Open the menu: Hover over a block to show "⋮⋮" on its left. Click it to open a menu where you can convert the block type, duplicate, move or delete the block, or add a block below.
- Reorder: Drag "⋮⋮".
Text blocks
| Block | Use |
|---|---|
| Text | A normal paragraph. |
| Heading 1–3 | Divides a page into sections. Headings appear in the table of contents (below). Heading 1 is the same size as the page title, so you normally use Heading 2 and 3. |
| Caption | Small, subdued text, such as a note under a table or image. |
| Quote | A quotation from another document. You can add the source below it. |
| Code | Program code or configuration files. Choose a language at the top right to show it with syntax highlighting. |
For text, headings and captions, you can choose left, center or right alignment from the menu.
When you select text, a menu appears for bold, italic, underline, strikethrough, code and links.
Balance line breaks
For text, headings and captions, turn on "Balance line breaks" in the menu to break lines at easy-to-read positions.
- Japanese text does not break in the middle of a word: Lines break between phrases rather than splitting a word in two.
- No last line with only one or two characters: Prevents a few characters from being pushed onto a line of their own at the end of a paragraph.
- Centered text gets even line lengths: When text wraps onto two lines, the lines come out close to symmetrical.
- English text is shown as is: English already breaks between words, so words are never split.
It suits short text in large or centered type, such as catchphrases and headings on the top page or short introductions. We recommend leaving it off for long body paragraphs.
It is off for all blocks by default. The setting is per block, and lines break the same way on the public site, in the preview and in the editor.
List blocks
| Block | Use |
|---|---|
| Bulleted list | A list of items in no particular order. |
| Numbered list | A list of items in order, such as steps. |
| To-do | Items that can be checked off. Use it for checklists and similar. |
Press the Tab key in an item to nest it one level down.
Layout blocks
| Block | Use |
|---|---|
| Callout | Content you want to stand out, such as warnings, notes and plan requirements. Click the icon (emoji) on the left to change or remove it. |
| Toggle | A block that shows only a one-line summary and opens or closes its content when clicked. Use it for supplementary information readers can skip, such as detailed FAQ answers or troubleshooting. |
| Table | Comparisons and lists of settings. Add rows and columns with the buttons in the cells, and make the first row or column a header from the menu. |
| Columns | Places content side by side (2–4 columns). Suits pages such as a top page with short descriptions side by side. |
| Tabs | Content readers switch between, showing one at a time (for example, instructions per plan or per OS). You can edit the labels in place. |
| Divider | A line that separates content. |
Callouts, quotes, to-dos, toggles, columns and tabs can contain other blocks (images, videos, tables and so on). However, columns and tabs cannot contain columns or tabs.
Toggle
The first line of a toggle is its summary and is shown even when it is closed. Press Enter on the summary line to write the content below it. Blocks inside are shown only when the toggle is open.
A toggle on the public site. Click the summary line to open it and show the content ("Do they expire?" below is a closed nested toggle).
- Public site: Shown closed at first. Readers click the summary line to open it.
- Editor: Click the arrow on the left of the summary to open or close it. It is shown open at first so you can write easily. The open or closed state is not saved.
- AI chat and search: The content is read even when the toggle is closed.
- Nesting: You can put a toggle inside a toggle.
Media blocks
| Block | Use |
|---|---|
| Image | Images such as screenshots. Click an image to replace it or change its alternative text. |
| Video | Embeds a YouTube, Vimeo or Loom video. Enter the video URL and a caption (a description of the video). |
| Link card | Shows a link to another site as a card with a title, description and image. |
For images and videos, drag the handles on the left and right that appear on hover to change the width, and choose left, center or right alignment with the button at the top right. Double-click a handle to return to the original size (for videos, the full content width).
The AI chat cannot read text inside images or the content of videos. Give images alternative text and videos a caption, and also write important steps in the body, so the AI chat can answer questions more easily.
