BYOK (bring your own API key)
BYOK (Bring Your Own Key) lets you register your own AI service API key with Monjiro and use it for AI chat answers. With a BYOK plan, Monjiro's monthly fee is lower, and AI usage is billed directly by your AI service.
Not available on the Free plan. For pricing, see the "BYOK" tab in Pricing plans.
Benefits of BYOK
- No limit on answers: No monthly AI answers limit applies.
- Manage AI costs yourself: Check usage fees in your AI service's console, and set limits on the AI service's side.
- Use the AI service your company specifies: If your company has a contract with an AI service, you can use its API key.
Supported AI services

Register an API key
Only the organization's Owner and Admins can register an API key. The registered API key is used for the AI chat of all the organization's documents (public site, embeds, the editor's chat and the preview).
- Open "Organization settings" from the account menu at the top right of the screen.
- Under "AI settings", choose the AI service to use.
- Paste the API key and click "Save". When you save, Monjiro checks that the API key can be used.

Register your API key as soon as you subscribe to a BYOK plan. Until an API key is registered, readers who ask a question see "The AI chat cannot answer right now" (Monjiro's AI does not answer in its place). A notice prompting you to register also appears under "AI settings" in the organization settings.
How your API key is handled
- The API key is used only to generate AI chat answers. It is not used for any other purpose.
- Once saved, the full API key is never shown on screen (only the first few characters are shown).
- To switch to a different API key, register the new one. Click "Delete" to remove the registration.
If the API key stops working because it expired, was revoked, or hit the AI service's usage limit or ran out of balance, the AI chat cannot answer. Check usage and limits in your AI service's console.

How much does API usage cost?
It depends on your AI service's pricing. It varies with the length of answers and the amount of documentation referenced.
Can I switch from a With AI plan to BYOK?
Yes. Under "Change plan" in "Plan" in the organization settings, set how AI is used to "BYOK", click "Change", and register your API key. Only the organization's Owner can do this. After switching to BYOK, answers use your registered API key. On a With AI plan, Monjiro's AI answers even if you have registered an API key.
What happens to my monthly fee when I switch to BYOK?
The With AI fee (¥1,000/month per document slot) no longer applies. The difference for the remaining days of this month is deducted from your next bill.
What happens to extra AI answers I bought when I switch to BYOK?
They remain until they expire. They are not used while on BYOK because there is no limit on answers, and you can use them again when you switch back to With AI. You cannot buy extra AI answers while on BYOK.
