AI chat
With an AI chat on your public site, readers can ask questions about your documentation, and the AI answers based on its content.
AI chat settings
A newly created document has the AI chat enabled by default. Once you publish, the AI chat appears at the bottom right of the public site.
To change the settings, follow these steps.
- In the "Document" tab of the editor's right panel, open "AI chat".
- Fill in the following items and click "Save". To hide the AI chat on the public site, turn off "Enable the AI chat".
- Publish the document. The settings take effect when you publish.
| Item | Description |
|---|---|
| Service name | The name of the service your documentation describes (for example, Example Cloud). |
| Service description | Describe what the service is, and who uses it for what. The AI uses this as the background for questions (such as what "this documentation" describes). |
| Greeting | The message shown first when the chat opens. If empty, the default message is shown. |
| Layout | How the chat is shown when a reader opens it for the first time. Choose "Float (a window at the bottom right)" or "Right pane (next to the content)". Readers can switch between them in the chat. |
| Sites allowed to embed | Used when embedding the AI chat in other sites (see below). |
Open the document's "Preview" to ask the AI chat at the bottom right questions based on the unpublished document. Questions asked in the preview do not count toward your monthly AI answers.
How readers use it
- Clicking the button at the bottom right of the public site opens the chat.
- Readers can rate each answer as helpful or not helpful.
- Past chats can be reopened from the button at the top left of the chat (see "How long chat history is kept" below).
- Answers are generated automatically by AI and may contain mistakes.
Place an "AI chat input" block in your content so readers can start asking questions right from the page (for adding blocks, see Create a document).
How long chat history is kept
Readers can see their own chat history when they open the public site in the same browser.
- How long chats are kept: 24 hours from the last use of the AI chat. Each use extends it to 24 hours from that point.
- If not used for 24 hours: The history is no longer shown, and a new chat starts.
- Per browser: History is separate for each browser. It is not shown in a different browser or device, or in private browsing. It also disappears if the browser's cookies or site data are deleted.
- Embedded chats: The history of a chat embedded in another site is separate for each site it is embedded in. If a reader opens the public site from a link in an answer in the embedded chat, they can continue that conversation on the public site.
Questions and answers that are no longer shown to readers are handled in accordance with the Privacy Policy.
Embed in other sites
You can embed the AI chat in other sites, such as your company's website.
- In "Sites allowed to embed", enter the sites to embed in, one per line, in the form https://example.com (up to 10). If empty, the chat cannot be embedded in any site.
- Save and publish the document.
- Copy the "Embed code" and paste it into the HTML of the site you are embedding in.
Check the number of questions
"Q&A count" on the document's dashboard shows the number of readers' questions per day. Choose the period from "7 days", "30 days" or "90 days". It counts readers' questions on the public site and in embedded chats. Questions in deleted conversations are not included (see "Delete a conversation" below).
View Q&A history
Click "View Q&A history" on the dashboard to see the questions readers asked in the AI chat, newest first. Questions tried in the editor or the preview are not included.
- Filters: Filter by "Period", "Source" ("Public site", "Embed"), "Version", answer rating ("Helpful", "Not helpful", "Not rated") and "Search questions". The number of ratings is shown above the list.
- Version: Each question shows the version of the document (v1, v2, ...) that was published when the AI answered. Choose a version under "Version" to show only the questions from that version. Use it to check whether answer ratings changed after you republished the document.
- View the conversation: Click a question to show the conversation it belongs to (the reader's questions and the AI's answers). The version an answer was based on is shown at the bottom right of each AI answer.
- Improving your documentation: Starting from "Not helpful" questions makes it easier to find what is missing from your documentation.
AI tools connected through MCP integration can also read the Q&A history (deleted conversations are not included).
Delete a conversation
You can delete conversations from the Q&A history, such as conversations containing personal information or ones sent for testing.
- In the Q&A history, click a question in the conversation you want to delete to open it.
- Click "Delete conversation" (the trash can button) at the top right of the conversation.
- On the confirmation screen, click "Delete".
A deleted conversation works as follows.
- What is deleted: All questions and answers in the conversation are deleted. You cannot delete questions one by one.
- Q&A history and counts: It is no longer included in the list, the rating counts or "Q&A count" on the dashboard. It is also not included in the Q&A history read through MCP.
- Reader's screen: It is also removed from the reader's AI chat history.
- Undo: A deleted conversation cannot be restored.
Limits on the public chat
The AI chat on the public site and in other sites it is embedded in has limits to prevent excessive use. When a limit is reached, the AI does not answer readers' questions, and a message appears in the chat.
| Limit | Details | Message shown to readers |
|---|---|---|
| Messages per reader | Each reader (browser) can send up to 30 questions in the last 24 hours. | "You have reached the message limit. Please try again later." |
| Organization's monthly AI answers | When the organization uses up this month's AI answers and its extra AI answers, the AI cannot answer for the rest of the month. BYOK plans have no limit on the number of answers. | "The AI chat cannot answer right now. Please try again later." |
- How messages per reader are counted: Questions sent more than 24 hours ago are not counted. Rather than resetting all at once at a fixed time, readers can send again as time passes.
- How readers are counted: Readers are told apart by browser. The same person using a different browser or device is counted as a different reader.
- Preview: Questions tried in the editor's preview do not count toward either limit.
- Organization's monthly AI answers: For the number of answers and the notices when they run out, see Pricing plans. Messages to readers do not include any information about your plan or AI answers.
